Tyler Cowen on Malthusian Moralities for a Post-Pandemic World – Interintellect SuperSalon

Tyler Cowen joined Interintellect founder Anna Gát and fellow Interintellect Anton Troynikov for this SuperSalon to reexamine Malthus’s ideas.

In An Essay on the Principle of Population, Enlightenment scholar Thomas Malthus described what has come to be known as the Malthusian catastrophe: while populations grow exponentially, agricultural output increases only linearly.

It is commonly believed that Malthus foresaw a world of poverty and hunger, as population growth would inevitably outstrip our ability to feed everyone. But is that really what he wrote, or might he have subtler messages for us?

Tyler Cowen on How Scientific Funding Moves Too Slowly, and How He’s Fixing It

Dr. Tyler Cowen, renowned economist and chairman of the Mercatus Center at George Mason University, discusses a powerful new model to accelerate funding for scientific and medical research that he launched in 2020.

Giving out $43 million to 176 projects since April 2020, the Fast Grants program makes a priority of giving much-needed grants in a matter of days, not months.

Fast Grants support has made possible breakthroughs including the rapid and affordable “spit tests” that were used in the NBA playoffs, and now in use around the world.

Tyler Cowen and I discuss innovation, art, music, touch, directionality in history, and Star Trek

I was honored to get to spend an hour chatting with Prof. Tyler Cowen of George Mason University. Tyler is the author of several books on topics ranging from the value of commercial culture to economic stagnation in the US. Tyler is remarkable in his breadth of learning, intense curiosity, and freshness of his ideas. While he does not come from a background in the physical sciences and engineering, I nevertheless think he has a great deal to offer my audience, as I have learned an inestimable amount from his books, podcast episodes, and public appearances. You can learn more about Tyler in the following places

Clip 1: Ted Gioia about input and output. (00:18)
Our society is focused on output: What do you produce, what do you create, what do you deliver.
Ted Gioia explains that we often forget that our output is a result of our input.
Extract from "Conversation with Tyler" # 79

Clip 2: Sam Harris about the distinction between merely consuming the ideas of others and thinking things through on one’s own. (01:58)
Extract from Ask me anything #12.
