Why We’re Too Complacent (with Tyler Cowen) – Free Thoughts Podcast – Libertarianism.org

Tyler Cowen joins us this week to talk about the slowing pace of innovation and growth in the United States over the past few decades. Has American society become too complacent? What would a more dynamic society look like?

Show Notes and Further Reading:
Cowen’s book on the subject is The Complacent Class: The Self-Defeating Quest for the American Dream (2017).
Cowen refers to this study by Enrico Moretti and Chang-Tai Hsieh called “Why Do Cities Matter?,” which claims that “Lowering regulatory constraints in [major] cities to the level of the median city would expand their work force and increase U.S. GDP by 9.5%.”

Trevor mentions this episode of Free Thoughts featuring Yuval Levin, “Stuck in Political Nostalgia.”

In Defense of Big Business (with Tyler Cowen)

Tyler Cowen joins us to discuss his new book; Big Business: A Love Letter to an American Anti-Hero. Throughout the conversation, Trevor and Aaron ask Tyler about crony capitalism, how Trump engages with big businesses, and the role of CEO’s. Cowen believes that big businesses are actually given a pretty unfair reputation as they create much more value than they are given credit for.

Why is big business coming under heavier fire recently? How big is “big business”? Do CEO’s cheat more or less than others? Do you people like going to work and should they? How should big businesses interact with the federal government? How big is the finance world and is it too big? Why is a healthy financial sector important? If big business is good, why is it widely unliked?

Tyler Cowen: "Which are the true perils facing democracy?"

Abstract: "Democracy works best when it is possible to judge truth. But what are the preconditions, epistemic and otherwise, for this to come about? Cass Sunstein has been one of the most profound theorists on this question. He has laid out the conditions for political polarization, how the modern world often encourages them, and how we might reverse this. How can we make our democracy more deliberative? What should be the role of constitutions in this process? His book Nudge, co-authored with Richard Thaler, provides some further microfoundations for rethinking how a better democracy might be reconstituted. Overall, Cass Sunstein is one of our leading thinkers on how democracy stands in peril and how we might save it and indeed improve it."

This lecture was held at the 2018 Holberg

David Deutsch and Tyler Cowen: Reaction

The video I am responding to is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_6vYwCkIpc which is on the @Mercatus Center channel with Tyler Cowen. The original is well worth watching in its entirety. My response does not do it justice and is just intended as a supplement for those who have watched the whole thing and might have some questions at the end about various parts. I’m not pretending to speak for David – I’m just giving my own perspective given my understanding of what I’ve read in, for example, “The Beginning of Infinity”.

Tyler Cowen does a fantastic job here of questioning David and articulating what are some of the frequently heard objections about this world view. It is, for example, common to hear something between a denigration to a downplaying of the importance of Popper

Average Is Over by Tyler Cowen [Book Review]

Average is Over by Tyler Cowen is a fabulous book that will get you thinking about our role in the future. I cover it in this in-depth book review & summary.

One of my favorite quotes:

“This step-by-step evolution is how intelligent technology will change a lot of industries. At first the machine hardly adds anything and it’s really just an investment in building a better machine. At the second step, experts–in the field of the program’s operation–will be required to work with the machines, to fill the gaps in what the machines can do. As the programs improve, the next and third step is that the humans understand the programs very

Why Governments Fail – The Good Fight with Yascha Mounk (Tyler Cowen)

The pandemic was supposed to prove the value of public health institutions like the CDC; instead, it exposed their inability to deal with a serious pandemic without serious errors. Tyler Cowen, a professor of economics at George Mason University, worries that these failures have a deeper cause: as the citizens of countries like the United States come to trust each other less and less, they are increasingly incapable of meeting the big challenges that await them.

In this week’s conversation, Yascha Mounk and Tyler Cowen talk about populism, the failure of state institutions during the pandemic, and the value of economic growth.

Please do listen and spread the word about The Good Fight.
