Roger Farmer’s Comments On The Natural Rate Of Unemployment — Brian Romanchuk

Roger Farmer’s Comments On The Natural Rate Of Unemployment — Brian Romanchuk

One of my concerns about mainstream economic methodology is the dependence upon hidden variables that are estimated with techniques like the Kalman Filter. The issue is that the resulting methodology is non-falsifiable: it will always end up being consistent with any observed data (admittedly, some outright bizarre behaviour might be rejected). Although this might appear to be my own hobby horse, I just want to note that I was not the first person to make such a complaint. Various heterodox authors have levelled similar complaints, but my feeling they have done so in such a long-winded fashion that non-heterodox readers like myself have a very hard time picking out what is a straightforward — but important —

Roger Farmer explains his new paradigm: Keynesian Search Theory

Join Professor Roger Farmer in this second part of a two part lecture in which he takes you on a journey through the evolution of his ideas. In Part 1 Professor Farmer explains what’s wrong with New Keynesian economics and why it cannot explain the facts. In Part 2, he provides an alternative paradigm — Keynesian Search Theory — that can explain these facts and that offers a rich research agenda for graduate students to build upon. This first part of the lecture is also available on YouTube.

These two parts represent the concluding lecture in a ten part series delivered to advanced graduate students at the University of Warwick in the Autumn of 2020. The other lectures are available on Professor Farmer’s website at rogerfarmer.com. You can follow him on twitter @farmerf

Roger Farmer’s Work: A Bridge Between Heterodoxy And The Mainstream? — Brian Romanchuk

I am now returning to my work on recession analysis, covering the background research that will make its way into the second volume of recessions. I have more work to do on nonlinear DSGE models, but my argument is that they are not inherently that interesting, given their mathematical intractability. Yes, you can tell stories with them — but so what? I can tell stories any number of ways, all of them more interesting.Rather than chase after hundreds of papers that I think are uninteresting and will be rapidly made obsolete by the ongoing wave of research, I would rather focus on a niche area that I think is interesting. Roger E. Farmer has been publishing models for some time that fit within the

Roger Farmer: The MACROECONOMICS of CORONAVIRUS | Spicy Takes Podcast #5

Economics can tell us a lot about the COVID-19 pandemic. Whether as a study of human behaviour or an analysis of the appropriate policy responses, exploring the ways that markets operate will be central to ensuring that society doesn’t enter a stage of perpetual stagnation.

Roger E.A. Farmer (Twitter:@farmerrf) is an economics Professor at Warwick University, as well as the author of several important books, including “Prosperity for all: how to prevent financial crises”. We discuss how this recession
