Will Covid make countries drop cash and adopt digital currencies? | Kenneth Rogoff
Read full article here: https://readnews.io/speojr
As the Covid-19 crisis accelerates the long-term shift away from cash (at least in tax-compliant, legal transactions), official discussions about digital currencies are heating up. Between the impending launch of Facebooks Libra and Chinas proposed central-bank digital currency, events now could reshape global finance for a generation. A recent report from the G30 argues that if central banks want to shape the outcome, they need to start moving fast. Much is at stake, including global financial stability and control of information. Financial innovation, if not carefully managed, is often at the root of a crisis, and the dollar gives the US significant monitoring and sanctions capabilities. Dollar dominance is not just about what

Mr Spock never actually said to Captain Kirk: Its life, Jim, but not as we know it. (That comes from the 1987 single Star Trekkin. ) But the principle is sound. If we ever find extraterrestrial life, will we even recognise it as life at all? It might be so alien that its actually lyfe. Lyfe is a recent scientific coinage defined as any system that combines four processes: dissipation, autocatalysis, homeostasis, and learning. Life in the familiar sense is merely the instance of lyfe that we are familiar with on Earth, but other much weirder types might exist. The authors of the paper (Defining Lyfe in the Universe) dont explain the reasoning behind the new spelling; lyfe was already a common form of, er, life in the 14th and 15th

In a World Student Team Championship game played in Graz in 1972, Hübner played one move and offered a draw to Kenneth Rogoff, who accepted. However, the arbiters insisted that some moves be played, so the players played the following ridiculous game: 1.c4 Nf6 2.Nf3 g6 3.Ng1 Bg7 4.Qa4 0-0 5.Qxd7 Qxd7 6.g4 Qxd2+ 7.Kxd2 Nxg4 8.b4 a5 9.a4 Bxa1 10.Bb2 Nc6 11.Bh8 Bg7 12.h4 axb4 (draw agreed). The arbiters ruled that both players must apologize and play an actual game at 7 p.m. Rogoff appeared and apologized; Hübner did neither. Hübner’s clock was started, and after an hour Rogoff was declared the winner.
The German grandmaster Robert Hübner also lost a game without playing any moves.

This Time Is Different (Audiobook) by Carmen Reinhart, Kenneth Rogoff Reviews:
Publisher’s Summary
Throughout history, rich and poor countries alike have been lending, borrowing, crashing – and recovering – their way through an extraordinary range of financial crises. Each time, the experts have chimed, ""this time is different"" – claiming that the old rules of valuation no longer apply and that the new situation bears little similarity to past disasters. This book proves that premise wrong. Covering 66 countries across five continents, This Time Is Different presents a comprehensive look at the varieties of financial crises, and guides

Coronavirus chaos reigns.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged 1,400 points, or 5.6%, to a new low on Wednesday as the World Health Organization declared the fast-spreading coronavirus a global pandemic.
Here’s how five market commentators interpreted this market downturn:
Coronavirus stock market predictions
Stephanie Lang, chief investment officer at Homrich Berg, said the market may be nearing a bottom:
“What we’re trying to determine at this point is, is this going to be a short-term economic shock or is this going to start feeding into business confidence and consumer confidence where you ultimately see businesses get worried and start laying off
