What if Trump’s wall were solar powered?

February 10, 2017

Clearly, this is nonsense. A complete waste of time. It’s not our intention to suggest the US will pay for its Mexico border wall by putting solar panels along the south side. That’s definitely probably not going to happen. Though comic book supervillains might draft secret plans to harvest daylight from their enemies, the evidence that POTUS is a comic book supervillian is at best circumstantial. What we have here is a hypothetical.Would it work, though?Stage I: building a Wall“What a great idea!” says Doug McKenzie, a solar analyst and consultant, who goes on to explain why it’s a terrible idea. (Doug blogs at lightsonsolar.com: the principles and calculations that follow are mostly referencing off his work. Thanks also to Energy Futurist / Analyst / Writer / Speaker Chris Nelder for

11:02 am

Why’s it only Wednesday? Bloody hell.

And it seems we might have a bork with the comment system.

Let me try poking around to see if this damn jalopy of a website can actually work for once.

11:04 am

(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

Ah! There. That seemed to work.

Okay, let’s start again. If you don’t have a functioning comment box try refreshing the page.

11:05 am

Or just don’t comment. Your choice. I’m fine with either of those.

Welcome, then, to Markets Live.

Here, have a picture.

11:02 am

Right. Let’s get this started, why don’t we.

Welcome to Markets Live, FT Alphaville’s daily you know. This thing.

11:03 am

Portrait wise, let’s start with something practical.

That’s Natixis’s Italian refere …. oh, wait, there’s more.

11:04 am

That’s Natixis’s Italian referendum survival guide.

What I make from it is that Italy’s McGuffin referendum has delivered a definitive result — albeit "definitive" does not imply that it makes any kind of sense.

11:05 am

The gist here, I think, is there’s about a 70% probability of a new technocratic government, to tide us

Welcome to Markets Live

FT Alphaville’s attempt to unite an increasingly polarised and fractious British public …

Yeah! Numbers!

BE

Off we go then. Welcome, hello, hi.

BE

This is Markets Live, FT Alphaville’s live blog where “editors” discuss “moves”, which are sometimes screenshotted by other FT journalists, which then end up featuring incongruously in Bloomberg stories.

Hi, welcome, hello, hey. This is Markets Live, FT Alphaville’s daily thing.

BE

Paul’s in some kind of three-line-whip meeting this morning, so you have me solo for half an hour at least.

BE

The main benefit of which is that I get to pick the picture.

BE

BE

It’s Ada Lovelace Day.

BE

And that’s from Sydney Padua’s The Thrilling Adventures of Lovelace and Babbage.

Which I can’t recommend highly enough. Buy three copies each. Possibly five.

And so, to stuff.

FTSE might — might! — get to a record by the close today.

From BCA’s report on investment options when facing down an apocalypse.

BE

BCA’s Canadian, so it’s difficult to tell how much of it’s sincere.

BE

If the risk of doomsday is, in fact, elevated, what is an investor to do? For one thing, “saving for a rainy day” becomes a less desirable proposition if that rain consists of fire and brimstone.

That’s from the Weekend FT shindig in Hampstead on Saturday.

Which I missed, due to stuff, but I hear it was fun.

BE

Rainy, but fun.

PM

Only properly rainy at the end

PM

There were some great sessions

PM

Needed more food vans tho — and an inside drinking venue. Both of which I think will be fixed for next year
